Designing and Building High-End Production Studios

Year 2022

Role Creative Producer

Challenge

With UWorld’s in-house video production team rapidly growing, the need for dedicated, high-quality production studios became urgent. The existing setup was limiting the team’s ability to produce top-tier educational content efficiently. My goal was to design two distinct production studios: a smaller one for instructor live streams and social media content, and a larger, more versatile space for full instructional filming, including multiple instructors, props, and set pieces. The challenge was to create flexible, soundproof spaces with specialized features like a cyc wall and ceiling rigged lighting, ensuring the production team could meet the increasing content demands.

Process

I began by researching the specific needs of the production team, identifying key requirements such as space for top-down shots, effective soundproofing, and flexible lighting setups. I meticulously planned out the gear requirements, electrical needs, and ceiling rigging for both studios.

The most challenging part of the process was managing the intricate technical specifications, especially with the need for seamless transitions between different filming styles (top-down, multi-instructor setups). The cyc wall and tally light system required precise coordination with the construction team. I worked closely with contractors to oversee the construction phase, ensuring that every aspect—from soundproofing to electrical wiring—was up to the production standards we needed.

My favorite part of the project was watching the space transform and come to life, from the initial layout to the final installation of equipment. After construction, my team and I organized and rigged all gear, making sure the studios were functional and efficient for daily use.

Impact

The studios had an immediate and profound impact on the UWorld Production Team. The smaller studio allowed for quicker turnarounds on live streams and social media content, while the larger studio provided flexibility for more complex instructional videos. The team praised the cyc wall for its seamless filming capabilities and the tally light system that streamlined communication with the external office during production.

Since completion, the studios have been used daily, enabling the team to scale up content production significantly. The soundproofing and lighting rigging were especially well-received, creating a professional-grade filming environment. The new studios have allowed UWorld to maintain the high quality of their educational content while increasing output.

Learnings

This project taught me the importance of planning for scalability and flexibility in design. I also gained deeper insight into the technical aspects of soundproofing and lighting for professional video production. Additionally, overseeing the construction process reinforced the need for clear communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, from contractors to the production team. This experience equipped me with a refined approach to handling complex, multifaceted design challenges.
